At first, there was a vision. The vision of a multicultural carnival without stylistic limits; the vision of a colourful theatre with fascinating characters; the vision of a joyful and exuberant lifestyle, full of irony, humour and sophistication. The visionary was August Darnell, born in the Bronx. Kid Creole and the Coconuts was born from Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. In the 1970s, the Savannah Band had successfully merged the sound of the big band of the 1940s (Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Louis Prima) with the dancefloor of the disco era. August Darnell then created Kid Creole and The Coconuts in 1981 and incorporated a touch of sunshine into his music - calypso, soca, salsa, rhythm and blues, soul, jazz, funk, hiphop, etc. with a strong Caribbean accent. 38 years later, the man and his group are still synonymous with adventure and escape...
