"Saint-Émilion (in Gascon: Sent Milion) is a medieval city of about 2,000 inhabitants.
It is a major tourist site - an average of 1,000,000 people visit it every year - that has an important monumental ensemble (hermitage, monolithic church, collegiate church, archbishops’ palace, wealthy buildings and remains of fortifications) which can be found in winding alleys (called «mounds») and shaded squares.
Beyond its exceptional monuments and landscapes, it enjoys the reputation of its oenological (Saint-Emilion vineyard) and gastronomic heritage (macaroons, restaurants, etc.).
Heritage awareness in the territory of Saint- Emilion began in the 19th century, with the classification of the collegiate church in 1840.
Today, the municipality has 15 protected monuments and three classified sites (in 1935 and 1936). The heritage policy continued in the 20th century with the drafting of urban planning documents for the town but also for the entire territory of the Saint-Emilion Jurisdiction, guaranteeing commitments to preserve and enhance the landscape and architectural heritage."
Mr Bernard LAURET, mayor of Saint-Emilion
